The Membership Director is responsible for directing all aspects of membership for the branch including recruitment of new members, retention of existing members and supervision of assigned staff to ensure overall growth of membership. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for upholding the Judeo-Christian principles that are central to our mission by modeling behaviors that exemplify the four pillars of character - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Implements membership strategies that support recruitment of new members and retention of existing members. Creates a member-focused culture and models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Fosters a climate of innovation and resolves problems to ensure member satisfaction.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Promotes program and membership enrollment in interactions with existing and potential members. Coordinates program registration, including logistics to support phone, walk-in and web registration. Coordinates with marketing efforts to maximize enrollments and provides ongoing support to Program Directors on related issues.
  • Participates in the planning of the annual Membership budget; manages and implements the approved budget for membership and takes appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Ensures proper implementation of front desk procedures. Reviews and updates desk procedures and communicates changes to staff. Coordinates with the Metro office as necessary on financial transactions.
  • Organizes membership events at the Y and represents the Y at community events to promote the YMCA.
  • Leads assigned aspects of the fund-raising campaign.
  • Participates in staff meetings and other required meetings.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises all employee in the Membership Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, members, and the general public. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts and interest and count money. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written or diagram form and interpret a variety of reports.
  • Self-motivated. Ability to resolve conflict between staff members and with members. Ability to resolve member concerns. Open to coaching staff and being coached when necessary. Comfortable with conducting disciplinary action with staff when needed. Ability to set priorities for self and staff and lead in a team environment. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Certifications – CPR/AED and First Aid certification is required upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
